Keywords Acquires Wushu: A Strategic Move to Enhance Game Development Capabilities
The gaming industry experienced a noteworthy change with Keywords' recent purchase of game developer Wushu. This announcement comes in the wake of Keywords recently downsizing at one of its other subsidiaries, Lively Studios, highlighting the dynamic nature of the industry.
Founded in 2017, Wushu initially aimed to create its own games but has since shifted to a work-for-hire approach, contributing to popular titles like Fall Guys and Baldur's Gate 3. The decision for Keywords to acquire Wushu is attributed to the company's consistent growth in a fluctuating market and the desire to enhance their production capabilities. While Wushu will likely maintain its current operational model, it will benefit from a closer relationship with the wider portfolio owned by Keywords.
Bertrand Bodson, the CEO of Keywords, regards this acquisition as a pivotal strategy for bolstering their game development resources worldwide. With two studios now in Liverpool, a key talent hub in the UK, it signifies a positive investment in the local gaming community.
Bodson highlighted the importance of Wushu's skilled workforce and their existing connections within the industry, which will serve as valuable resources that enhance their current Create studios. He expressed enthusiasm about working collaboratively with Alan McDermott and the talented individuals at Wushu to foster growth.
The company Wushu will still be headed by its founder Alan McDermott, along with the existing management team. He views this acquisition as an opportunity for exciting developments without jeopardizing their creative freedom. McDermott believes this partnership will enable them to improve services for their long-term clients, providing access to a vast network of resources and diverse skill sets.
He also emphasized that Keywords shares their vision for ongoing development and the commitment to prioritizing their team's well-being. McDermott looks forward to working together with Keywords as they take on increasingly ambitious projects in the future, indicating a bright outlook for the future of Wushu.
