Interface 

I’ve hardly seen anything more minimalistic and simple than Text Free interface. Someone may consider it boring, but I adore such designer’s solutions. The in-app navigation is extremely simple and straightforward, so no one gets lost. The interface is made up of clear screens for different actions. Everything is easy to find and to use. The buttons are right-sized, large thumbs and index fingers don’t prevent from selecting the necessary option on-the-go.

Not too many ads. My evaluation is 9 out of 10 because of some ads.

The app is used for people within the US for keeping in touch with friends and family who are not in popular messengers or use it for business calls. The most outstanding feature is choosing your own number that can consist of digits or digits + letters. It means you can create a number like (555) 500-PETE and order pizza by calling the landmine phone number. However, to prevent your number from expiring, you need to pay $4.99 monthly. Text Free app is a perfect tool for US residents who go on vacation or business trips abroad. You have 60 minutes to call anyone in the U.S., Canada or Mexico. However, the outbound minutes should be either earned or purchased (what doesn’t make the app completely free). 6/10 for being not actually free.

Performance

I’ve been using the app for about 5 days, and only 1 call out of 6 I made was interrupted. The messages are sent fast, you can attach media files (relatively quick uploading). I noticed no major bugs or crushes on my Android. The ads can be removed for $2.99 per month.

Some iOS users report sudden shutdowns. I don’t know if it is common. However, the developing team responds all the user reviews – and this is encouraging. I like companies who really strive for perfection. If I really needed the functionality of this app, I would appreciate it. The stability of the app performance could be improved, so I put 7 out of 10.

Text Free Google Play description says the platform support depends on the device, however, my colleagues noticed it doesn’t work on some older Androids. That’s surprising, I would suppose the target audience doesn’t use top mobile phone models, so it would be logical to extend the platform support. As for the iOS, it requires iOS 9.0 and later. No official version is available at Microsoft Store, perhaps you can find an APK and download it from third-party sites. 

The Verdict

Text Free app can be used for texting anyone, even those who don’t use messengers. However, its name doesn’t correspond the actual performance: a lot of functions are not free. The app interface and performance are well-thought-out and user-friendly, this is what someone would love to pay a few dollars. Nevertheless, there are a lot of analogues that offer totally free calls, voicemail, and messages.
